I bought myself my next root beer to taste. It was a treat from Costco since it came in a case with several other types of soda, including Black Cherry, something I have not had since I was a child.
Thomas Kemper Root Beer was the root beer to test. From their website: "One sip of Thomas Kemper Root Beer and you’ll taste where it all began. The obsession with smooth and creamy. The focus on rich and complex. We’ve been batch-brewing this custom soda since way back in 1990 and nobody’s beaten it yet. Sip it chilled and neat. Ice only dulls the flavor. Or get the scoop on a perfect float."
(They also have a low-cal root beer. From their website: "What in the world could be better than Thomas Kemper Cane Sugar Root Beer? How about the same hand-crafted taste with just 20 calories? That’s what you’ll find in every bottle of our great Low Calorie Root Beer. It’s sweetened with a bit of honey and a nice little secret: a lot of people in our taste tests like it better than regular root beers."
My take: The low-cal root beer is good. It may even be better than some regular root beers. But, it does not have the same flavor as the regular Thomas Kemper Root Beer. When I am drinking a low-cal or diet drink, I want it to taste like the regular. Sure, that may not be possible, but a man can dream, right? In this case, it is close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
The regular root beer is good. Really good. It has great taste and, because it is a cane sugar soda, it is a sweeter than what you might be used to. Sweet, however, is good. If you do not have a sweet tooth, this is not the root beer for you.
Score on a scale of 1 to 10 cases: 8.5 cases for the regular rootbeer. 8 cases for the lo-cal rootbeer.
